Descrição: In this chapter, we detail the steps to follow in an initial consultation appointment. These include introducing the behavioral health consultant (BHC) service to the patient, identifying and clarifying the problem for which the patient was referred, conducting a functional assessment of that problem, summarizing the problem, suggesting change options, and starting the change plan. We presented the basic 5A's structure in Figure 1 of the introduction. Figure 2.1 illustrates how these steps fit into a 30-minute time frame. In this chapter, we focus on a general format for any initial consultation. The chapters in Part II suggest additional material to cover in the initial consultation specific to a particular problem area.
