Lives on public transport have captured the imagination of acclaimed film directors such as Pedro Almodóvar, Jafar Panahi and Jim Jarmusch. Focusing on what is understood to be the ‘everyday’, morality issues take centre stage in some of their films. During my daily rides on thedabbab(minibus) in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, my attention was frequently drawn to the drivers’ concerns with issues of morality.¹ In public spaces women should not be sensually accessible to unrelated men (non-mahram) who, according to shariʿa law, are categorised as ‘strangers’ (ajanib).² Thedabbab, which is shared by unrelated men and women, therefore constitutes
