  • Descrição: In this article we explore first the understandings of disability. In particular we compare the individual model and social model of disability, the former being dominant and the later being generated by the disabled people's movement. Then the discussion turns to health inequalities. Disabled people are disadvantaged partly because of their over-representation in the lower socioeconomic groups. This section of the article will examine the meaning of health inequalities and its implications for understanding environmental health. Then the discussions are broadened to consider disabling environments. This topic is, by definition, extensive and could include transport, work environments, leisure, education, accessibility of information, and public amenities. Legislation and regulations are important here particularly in the creation of a more inclusive society/ environment, including the Disability Discrimination Act. Housing is the particular focus in this article. The article concludes by returning to the possibilities for challenging power relations and promoting the inclusion of the voices of disabled people in challenging the dominant social aspects of environmental health.
