Descrição:
This paperstartsfrom a recently discovered Vendel Period helmet.Acentraltheme is the composition of the population within a Late Iron Age aristocratic domain and how it can be perceived in ambiguous and contrasting burial customs. Taking into account the distribution of major barrows with lavish furnishings as well as less conspicuous burials and their contents, the existence of leading landowning families is discussed in relation to other domestic units included in a retinue system. This was a comprehensive organisational system where a retainer would carry out a variety of specialised social functions with different degrees of independence. Burial sites were part of an intentionally formed landscape architecture involving judicial aspects. The section of the landscape containing the helmet burial exemplifies how Vendel Period aristocratic domains were built and organised according to certain ideals, involving notions of spatial and organisational structure, as well as social hierarchy.
