Descrição: Al-Muʿāfā b. ʿImran, an ascetic and muḥaddith of the second century A. H., frequently appears in the secondary literature as the author of the first ṭabaqāt work in Arabic. This brief article examines the evidence for this attribution, rejects it, and brings together reports on al-Muʿāfā and his contribution to local Mosuli scholarship in the late second and third Islamic centuries.
