Descripción:
Zumberak is a special region, distinct both historically & geographically from other areas of central Croatia. A historical sketch describes the arrival of three distinct groups of refugees from the Ottoman Empire in the sixteenth century. Subsequently a special system of defense known as the Military March developed within a clearly defined area, affecting population density, agrarian landscape, & economic development. Although somewhat modified by modern social processes, the area retains its distinctive identity. Spatial relations can only be understood when such factors are taken into consideration. 5 Maps.
