  • Descrição: This paper deals with the phenomenon of workplace cyber bullying. It aims at extending a literature review with data collected from an empirical enquiry. We ask how the communication features of electronic mail redefine bullying in the workplace. Middle managers who claimed to be victims of bullying were interviewed. Grounded theory data analysis indicates a complementarity between face-to-face bullying and bullying via email. The sociotechnical features of email help redefine the main characteristics of workplace bullying: the intention to harm the target, the intensity and repetition of negative acts and power imbalances. The noxious use of emails also enables cyber violence committed by groups and mobbing phenomena. Additionally, the study shed light upon the discrimination and exclusion of victims regarded as “non-compliant” with their organization’s culture.
