Descrição: 현대 국제 사회의 성공적인 활동을 위해 영어 의사소통능력의 습득은 가장 필수적인 것으로 간주된다. 이렇게 중요한 영어 의사소통 능력은 다차원적이며, 그 사회언어학적 기능도 매우 복잡하여, 20여년의 역사밖에 안되는 언어테스팅이란 신학문분야의 이론으로는 영어 의사소통능력의 타당한 평가 방법의 개발은 결코 쉽지 않은 일이다. 역사적으로 평가 기법은 대체적으로 두 가지로 대별된다. 한가지는 영국 University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES)나 미국의 Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR)과 American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) 에서 활용하고 있는 직접 구술 면접 (Oral Proficiency Interview) 방식으로서 내용 타당도 (진정성: authenticity)를 강조한 방식이다. 다른 하나는 미국 Educational Testing Service (ETS)에서 활용하는 모의구술면접 (Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview: SOPI)방법으로서, 객관성 및 신뢰성, 실용성을 중시하는 기법이다. 우리나라 같은 대규모의 수험생 집단을 타당하게 평가해야하는 현실적인 제약이 많은 상황에서는 실용성, 객관성, 신뢰성을 중시하는 ETS의 SOPI방식을 따르는 것이 바람직할 것으로 판단된다. 따라서, 본 연구는 ETS에서 개발한 Test of Spoken English (TSE)에서 활용되는 영어 의사소통능력의 측정 기법인 모의구술면접 (SOPI)의 기법에 대한 타당성을 검증해 보고, 우리 나라의 현실적인 수험 실정에 타당한 회화능력의 바람직한 평가 방법을 모색해 보는데 주 목적이 있다. 더 나아가서 회화시험에 자연언어처리 (Natural Language Processing)의 최첨단 음성인지 기법의 응용 가능성을 조사해 보고자 하는데 부차적인 목적이 있다. 이를 위해서 의사소통능력 요소 및 시험 방식 양상에 관한 언어평가 이론에 근거한 Test of Oral Proficiency (TOP)의 사전 연구 (최인철, 1998)에 근거하여, 상관관계 분석, 회귀분석, 요인분석 및 일반화가능도 이론 등의 다양한 평가기법을 활용하여, 94명의 서울대학생을 대상으로 실험 평가를 통하여 연구를 시행하였다. 또한, 자연언어 음성인지 기법의 활용 가능성을 모색하기 위해서 영국 Cambridge 대학의 교수진이 주축이 되어서 개발한 음성인식시스템 (Hidden Markov Model TookKit Application Programming Interface)를 활용하였다. On the basis of previous research on simulated oral proficiency interview (SOPI) tests, the present research attempts to conduct a construct validation study on SOPI, which is to serve as a valid assessment tool measuring overall oral communicative skills. In order to explore the extent to which the test method facets and the scoring schemes of the SOPI test formats in question are valid and reliable, the current study employs not only qualitative approaches within a sound theoretical framework, but also quantitative research methods including Multiple Regression, Factor Analysis, GENOVA (Generalized Analysis of Variance) Program, and FACETS based on the Rasch latent trait model, Furthermore, the present study investigates the potential applicability of state-of-the-art speech recognition technology to testing oral proficiency, focusing on pronunciation. The overall robust results indicate that the SOPI testing schemes in question meet the requirements for valid measurement of oral proficiency and that more advanced recording facilities and more sophisticated assessing schemes driven by speech recognition technology are required for machine scoring to function as a viable alternative to human scoring.
