Provides basic information about such topics as minerals, energy resources, pollution, soils and erosion, wildlife and extinction, agriculture, the ocean, wilderness, hazardous wastes, population, environmental laws, ecology, and evolution. Six alphabetically organized volumes provide basic information about environmental topics for a junior high through high school audience. Almost 600 cross-referenced entries and 1,000 color pictures describe nature and how it functions, the ways in which humans use and abuse it, conservation methods and laws, and human economic and ethical relationships with nature. Entries are brief, and equal space is given to graphics and photographs (some of which add little of value) as to words. Includes lists of major U S environmental events, mainstream environmental organizations, and US government organizations with environmental responsibility.
