  • Descrição: Discusses the work of the artist and writer Daniel Buren with reference to his installation works 'Cabines èclatées' (1984; illus.). The authors consider the political element in Buren's writings, refer to the key moments in the evolution of his artistic career, and focus on his development of the 'Cabine éclatée' noting that the concept of an inner room sited in a gallery surrounding originated in 1975. They refer to the development of the concept from 1984 to 2006, explain that the first works in the series consisted of a plywood and canvas construction and developed into more sophisticated works such as 'Cabine éclatée no. 2' (1984; illus.) and 'Cabine éclatée, no, 6: les damiers' (1985; illus.), and focus on the importance of the concept of mobility to the works, also exploring Buren's use of the cube in arriving at their forms. They examine the relationship between architectural form and radical aesthetics in the works, consider Buren's use of mirrors in works created in the 1990s with reference to their impact on the viewers' experience of the works, and assess the political and aesthetic implications of the works.
