Descrição:
In the study of social changes under communism, Poland represents a particularly suitable & interesting case. There are plenty of statistical & sociological data more available in Poland than in any other communist country. Internal contradictions are relatively open for a scientific analysis. The tradition of Polish sociology is close enough to the West in order to make possible a meaningful exchange of data & insight. However, there are some differences in approach which have to be taken into consideration. According to several establishment-oriented Polish sociologists the multidimensional stratification of the new Polish society does not provide room for a SC based on political authority. The degree of equalitarianism seems to be exaggerated by them. Those social scientists who orient themselves toward the political establishment tend to operate with the empirical evidence without bothering enough with its real meaning within the broader historical perspective. At the same time when in the West dialectic thinking is gaining in popularity, empirical sociology in Eastern Europe tends to be more & more functionalistic. The hard data on Poland, in comparison with several other societies, show several disproportions & contradictions In economic, social, & cultural growth. Basic among them is the contradiction between the growing economic & cultural sophistication of Polish society, & its authoritarian structure of power relations. Even private farmers are largely dependent on the state, not to mention the remaining population all employed in the state-owned or state-controlled enterprises, offices, & institutions. All achievements in the advancement of Lc people in Poland have to be measured in terms of new desires & expectations which have been stimulated among various groups of the population. The equality of material status has not enough of social appeal as long as better opportunities & privileges are under the full control of the establishment people.
