  • Descripción: To date, the only book that has been published about the Swahili culture of the South Unguja District of Tanzania (Zanzibar) is Ireri Mbaabu's "Utamaduni wa Waswahili" ["Culture of the Swahili People"] (Kenya Publishing & Book Marketing Co. Ltd. 1985). On the cover of the book, Mbaabu, a professor at the University of Kenya, describes the scope of his efforts and states that his work is intended for students who attend secondary school in Kenya. The only other major scholarly work to appear on Swahili culture is the unpublished doctoral thesis of T. S. Y. Sengo, titled "The Indian Ocean Complex and the Kiswahili Folklore: The Case of Zanzibarian Tale-Performance" (Khartoum University, 1985). In his exploration of Swahili culture, Sengo presents various examples of Swahili culture as depicted in Swahili literature and poetry, including customs of dress, food, customs, nature, tradition, beliefs, behaviors, and social life in general.
