  • Descrição: Examines male and female domains in music and festivity in the Qajar and early Pahlavi periods. Distinguishes between the attributes of male and female "motreb" (festive musician) groups, and explains the decline during this period of the former; in the earlier Safavid and Zandi periods, motreb groups with dancer/prostitutes were well regarded and were seen as superior to their male counterparts, and eventually blurred the distinction between male and female domains. But in the Qajar period the association with prostitution ceased and women's groups were progressively driven out of main festivities; this process continued into the Pahlavi period and culminated with the "ruhowzi" or musical show.
