  • Description: Scholarship on racial issues in the work of Machado de Assis has improved considerably during the past two decades. Recently, scholars have begun to address more explicitly his opinions on slavery and race. Considering the fairly new approaches that undertake race as an unavoidable subject for a more complete understanding of Machado's works, this article furthers the discussion by examining racial issues in "Missa do galo" and "Teoria do medalhao." Using Toni Morrison's short story "Recitatif" as a starting point, I examine Machados's short stories to unveil the ignored presence and therefore undervalued importance of race in the tales.
