When I returned to my fieldsite in the summer of 2008 after almost two years away, the most visible change to the landscape was a bronze monument erected on the main street leading into the provincial town of Talas in the northwesternmost province of Kyrgyzstan. Guarding the entrance to the valley in which the two villages where I carried out long-term fieldwork are located, there is now a statue of Bürgö Baatyr. Vested in full armor, the hero is sitting on his horse with two tigers at his feet, baring their teeth. The installation is more than six meters high,
