    This volume provides an examination of the history of the colonies in the Americas which were possessions of Spain or Portugal in the New World and their pre-conquest background to the wars of independence in the early nineteenth century. It provides an account, covering all aspects of life -- political, social, religious, economic, military, and cultural and offers an inclusive discussion of all groups and strata of society -- including slaves and women -- and a discussion of race, class, and gender as it pertains to these colonies
