  • Descrição: Improvement of impact strength is one of the major benefits of fibre reinforcement of brittle materials. Traditional impact tests give rather limited information. This paper presents a technique for assessing the impact behaviour at loads below the failure load. In the test a single impact load is applied to the specimen and the displacement and subsequent oscillation of the specimen are followed using a non-contacting eddy-current transducer. Additionally, internal damage to the specimen is assessed by loss of ultrasonic pulse velocity. A simple theoretical model for the displacements based on Hertz's impact theory is presented. The test procedures were applied to glass reinforced gypsum specimens prepared by pre-mixing and conditioned in dry and humid environments.
