ABSTRACT IN GERMAN: In den vergangenen Jahren hat die Auseinandersetzung mit sog. Southern Multinationals, d. h. aus Schwellen- und Entwicklungsländern stammenden großen multinationalen Unternehmen, die verstärkt in Industrieländer investieren, erheblich an Bedeutung gewonnen. Die Internationalisierung der Unternehmen wird dabei zumeist unter Bezugnahme auf untersozialisierte Konzepte erklärt. Mit dem Ziel, damit verbundene Unzulänglichkeiten zu überwinden, nimmt der Beitrag eine relationale Perspektive ein. Konkret wird auf das Konzept der transnationalen Unternehmer rekurriert, demzufolge die Aufnahme und Durchführung wirtschaftlicher Aktivitäten außerhalb der Heimat der betreffenden Akteure auf deren Zugang zu transnationalen sozialen Netzwerken beruht. Der empirische Teil, der sich auf ein qualitatives Forschungsdesign stützt, betrachtet mit den Palanpuris eine kleine Gemeinschaft intensiv miteinander verflochtener, aus Indien stammender Diamanthändler, die ihre kleinen Familienunternehmen mit der Zeit zu den weltweit wichtigsten Diamanthandelszentren expandiert haben. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung demonstrieren, dass sich kleine Familienunternehmen allein aufgrund ihres Zugangs zu intensiven, vertrauenserfüllten Netzwerkbeziehen sukzessive zu Southern Multinationals weiterentwickeln können. Ein solcher Prozess kann dabei durch externe Faktoren wie Nachfrage- und Angebotsschocks verstärkt werden. // ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: In the last years, Southern Multinationals, i. e. large multinational firms from developing countries which increasingly invest in Western economies, could attract strong interest of many scholars. The different contributions aiming at explaining this phenomenon mainly resort to undersocialized conceptions of firm internationalization. To overcome the shortcomings of such approaches, this paper adopts a relational perspective. In particular, it refers to the concept of transnational entrepreneurs which argues that the inception and execution of economic activities outside the agents home region rely on the access to transnational social networks. The empirical part which has been based on a qualitative framework focuses on the Palanpuris, a small community of inter-connected diamond traders from India who slowly expanded their small family businesses from their home country to the worlds most important diamond trading hubs. In general, the findings suggest that small family-owned businesses due to their access to strong, trust-filled networks may gradually develop to Southern Multinationals a process which might be enforced by external factors like changes of demand and supply.
