  • Descrição: .  The paper presents a constraint based in Dependency Grammar (DG), called the Parallelism Requirement (PR). The PR predicts the extent to which the conjuncts of coordinate structures must be parallel. It states that the conjuncts must be parallel with respect to the number and syntactic function of the roots appearing in them. The term root is defined in terms of dependency structures. After the validity of the PR in English and German is established, the discussion examines the extent to which constituency grammar can explain the parallelism effect. The argument is made that constituency grammar is indeed in a position to express the PR, although doing so requires that certain non‐standard assumptions about constituency structures are adopted. Moreover, it is emphasized that the dependency‐based approach is preferable due to its paucity of structure.
