  • Descrição: An analysis of Alberto Blest-Gana's novel, Durante la Reconquista (1897), contends that he goes beyond most historical interpretations of the connection between the Spanish Reconquest & the emergence of a Chilean national culture to address the absence of subaltern groups in the narrative of the installation of elite hegemony. The story highlights the transition between the end of colonialism & the construction of a sense of nationality from the vantage point of "another one" in order to discover the basis for a national/cultural articulation of Chilean society. It is noted that subalternity is embodied in the character Filiberto Camara, a "son of the people" who participated in the Rancagua battle, depicted as the birthplace of a narrative epic rather than a place of defeat. Specifics discussed include ways in which Camara's testimony is linked to the design of a hegemonic narrative that denies alternative or different histories; how the illegibility of his speech helps to construct his particularity; understandings of social diversity; Camara's place in the national epic; & the novel as a reflection on the solidity of the elite's hegemony. 51 References.
