Description: The main purpose of this article is to offer some historical remarks on the exhibition areas of the Paulista Museum of the University of São Paulo. Attempts will be made to raise questions concerning the traditional ways of celebrating Brazil’s independence and to discuss interpretations that vulgarize the historical museum as a space where it is possible to “visualize” the past. O objetivo principal do artigo é propor algumas reflexões sobre os espaços expositivos do Museu Paulista da USP, problematizando a tradição comemorativa da Independência do Brasil que cerca a instituição bem como a noção banalizada de que nos museus de História é possível “visualizar” o passado.
