  • Descrição: In the archive of Toledo Cathedral there is a draft text of Pope Boniface VIII's award of June 1298 containing his arbitration of the conflicting claims to Gascony of Edward I of England and Philip IV of France. This article addresses the questions why such an item is in that Spanish repository at all, and why its text of the award bears so marked a resemblance to that included in the Chronicle written in north‐east England by Walter of Guisborough (alias Heminburgh). It is suggested that the answers to both questions have to do with the Castilian Petrus Hispanus, the pontiff's referendary in 1298, and, as cardinal bishop of Sabina, nuncio to England in 1307, on which occasion he is reported to have presented a proposal for the succession of the future Edward II of England to the Castilian throne.
