  • Descrição: The subsequent four chapters leverage interviews conducted with practitioners and audience members during the SWP's first three seasons in order to conduct an extensive and often persuasive assessment of how performance practices were developed in response to particular aspects of the Wanamaker's materiality. Chapter 3 concerns initial responses of practitioners and audiences to the jewellike candlelit space and includes a particularly insightful discussion of the affects produced for some audience members by the “bijou splendour of the playhouse” (57). Nonetheless, the thematic collating of an impressive array of practitioner, audience, press, and academic testimonies responding to the SWP's unique materiality will no doubt be of use both to practitioners seeking a workable understanding of this performance space and to academics, who will base their own arguments about the Wanamaker upon the primary materials that have been so judiciously gathered, organized, and analyzed in this volume.
