  • Descrição: The increasing interest in sociology of religion led in 1948 to the organization of a permanent International Conference of Sociology of Religion. In October 1953, the 4th Congress of the Conference was held in la Tourette, with some seventy participants from Europe, U.S. and Canada. Part of the Congress consisted in discussion of the state of religious sociology in various countries. In France, advances were made along the lines of methodology (Boulard, Lebret); investigations in urban parishes (Petit, Pin); in rural (Boulard, Le Bras, Ligier, Bernard, Mendras). Typology of the parishes has been studied (Boulard, Quoist), and problems of secularization (Schmitt-Eglin). The Belgian emphasis rests with attempts to study the intensity of religious life rather than only its extension (De Volder, Collard). The Flemish parts of Belgium are under study by Kerkhofs; Clara Leplae has been studying youth. On the Italian scene a center for documentation has been formed; religious practices in Mantua are being surveyed, and similar research is going on in Volterra. In Spain an office of information and statistics has been organized within the Church; in Gijon studies are underway of socio-economic conditions and their impact on religious life. The publication Razon Y Fe has published surveys on various cities, (Madrid, Barcelona, Vigo). Little information is available on Holland, but under Zeegers (Catholic Inst. of Socio-Ecclesiastic Studies) the religious situation in the country will be studied. Precise but not numerous surveys are reported by Groner from Germany and Austria. No properly socio-religious studies are being conducted in Canada; the report on the United States has been prepared by Eva Ross. Three commissions were at work during the Congress: Rural, Urban, and Frontiers. Le Bras traced the development of relations between sociology and the canonic law; Father Rosier exposed those relationships between sociology and psychology. Lebret analyzed the relations of sociology of religion and economics, Sociology of religion has at its base an applied sociometry using quantitative methods. This presents certain difficulties. The statistics would be of absolute value if one could, e.g., count the number of Christians who, under different circumstances, maintain the grace of God. Such statistics are clearly possible. Yet, it does not do to study only the religious practices; nor are they the only focal point of the religious life. Also, it is necessary to translate religious practices into professional, family and social lives. Consideration to all these aspects must be given in order that sociology of religion may establish scientific laws. J. Nehnevajsa.
