DURING THE SUMMER of 1955, in the settlement of Uelen, remains of ancient burials were found during incidental excavation work. We learned of these finds from I. P. Lavrov, who was working in Uelen as an art instructor in the wellknown bone-and ivory-carving workshop. During the same year D. A. Sergeyev, who was traveling with a group of school children from Urelik along the Chukchi coast, visited Uelen. At the site of the excavations, Sergeyev gathered several objects from the burials, which were later sent to the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography in Leningrad. Some of these objects are highly
