  • Descrição: The thesis is presented that the term rural denotes inadequately, both scientifically & in the public image, (1) the present area of Ru sociol, & (2) the potentially expanding area applicable to its viewpoint. Definitions of rural & urban invariably involve both areas which, taken together, complete a universe. Recent profound changes in living technology have produced a blend between the 2 rendering these traditional categories essentially inseparable & the terms analytically impotent. Res of individual Ru sociol'ts indicates awareness of this but the national society has offered little to resolve the dilemma. Meanwhile, the theoretical orientation of Ru sociol lags behind the needs of the new rurban society. The conventional bases of Ru sociol are never far removed from Ru/Ur considerations & they need redirection. These bases, which point up what is unique in the Ru sociol'al viewpoint are discussed under the following headings: the soc problem base, the community base, the soc characteristics base, the continuum base, the occup of agriculture base, & the admin'tive & org'al base. A closer collaboration with Ur & other branches of sociol is indicated particularly in those aspects which concern the basic ecological approach of Ru studies. Among other advantages such a unity would provide a logically defensible frame of reference for the study of contemporary US life; it would eliminate the necessity of Ru/Ur categories-now admittedly impossible of separation for concise analysis; it would integrate Ru sociol with other areas, thus giving it broader scope, & lend stronger support to sociol in general. It is a responsibility of Ru sociol to emerge into this enlarged area of study. AA.
