Descrição:
Since its founding, the AAUP has viewed higher education as necessary to support the production and dissemination of knowledge, which benefits students as well as society as a whole. Higher education also serves the common good through the development of a well-informed and thoughtful electorate and through faculty contributions to public service in and outside the university. The AAUP is known for its work on the key elements that are essential to promoting these democratic and social goals: academic freedom, strong job security for all faculty, due-process protections, shared governance, and collective bargaining. The AAUP has also coauthored and endorsed a Joint Statement on Rights and Freedoms of Students that outlines standards for students' academic freedom and their participation in campus governance. Here, Lieberwitz discusses the AAUP's support for affirmative action and its engagement with issues of discrimination and equality in higher education.
