  • Descrição: The concept of biomass as feedstock has emerged as an alternative to mitigate environmental and economic problems raised by the depletion of fossil fuels. Among the different types of biomass, the algae-based biorefinery has gained attention since it avoids competition for land using crops destined for food and other industrial applications. Besides that, algae are able to capture CO2 from the atmosphere to produce biomass. The ability to fix CO2 as a carbon source for growth, to accumulate biomass, and to produce metabolites has made algae an important source for biotechnological applications. Algae has been a platform to produce bioenergy and value-added products, thereby the exploration and the understanding of their genetic diversity and available omics data obtained by studies related to system biology allow the discovery of new pathways and the implementation of new or already existing genetic tools to make the algae biorefinery economically feasible through synthetic biology applications.
