Descrição:
Major discusses the attempt to find a source for the simile of the sparrow in the Old English version of the second book of Bede's Ecclesiastical History, considering the fidelity of the Old English text to the Latin. It is interesting to note, however, that in the Old English version there are only two major deviations from the Latin: the additions of the phrase an eagan bryhtm, "a twinkle of an eye" (136.3-4), and the word gerisenlicre, "more apt, honourable" (136.7). By means of this phrase and this word, the translator is able to allude to 1 Corinthians 15, the famous Pauline chapter on the resurrection of the body, and point the voice of the simile, an anonymous councillor of King Edwin's court, away from the hopelessness of paganism, and toward the salvation of Christianity. The simile of the sparrow is meant as an evangelizing device, which functions by contrasting despair to anything more hopeful than despair. Moreover, the additions are slight, and for this reason well-crafted; the translator can claim faithfulness to the original Latin, and at the same time modify, almost subconsciously, the level of despair of death to include one of the greatest biblical chapters on the hope of an afterlife through Christ. Through this biblical allusion, the Old English translator has heightened the craft of the simile beyond the original intentions of Bede.
