  • Descrição: An evaluation of the Arab sci'st Ibn Khaldun (1332-1406) as founder of sociol. Ibn Khaldun's biography is traced against the background of the prevailing conditions in the Arab world. An account is given of his chief work, usually called THE HIS- TORY OF ARAB AND BERBERS in the West & in particular of the first book, the PROLEGOMENA, & of its translations into Western languages. Ibn Khaldun was aware of founding a new, original & independent sci of culture & society. His term for culture, umran, corresponds etymologically to the Latin cultura; his term for society, al ijtima al insani, literally means human society. His key sociol'al term assabiyya may be translated as 'soc coherence' or esprit de corps. His creative ideas, in which he was a forerunner of Western soc sci, include: man as a pol'al animal; civilization as product of the city; the rise of civilization by settlement of the nomads & its decline through decadence in the cities; cyclical conception of history; econ interpretation of history; importance of DofL; concept of pol'al sovereignty; labor theory of value; & 'progressive' educ adapted to the student's growing needs.
