Descrição:
There were few female archaeologists before the early-20th century, when women’s rights had improved so they could hold academic positions and work outside of the home.I use the vast archive of professor Sven Nilsson (1787–1883) in an attempt to trace women devoted to the study of prehistory around 1870. I focus on two close friends: the journalist Eva Brag (1829–1913), who wrote several papers on archaeology, and Sven Nilsson’s daughter Ida (1840–1920). Brag was a sharp debater and defended Sven Nilsson’s views of archaeology and archaeological legislation in her papers. Ida Nilsson accompanied her father on his travels and excavations for several decades and must have been one of Sweden’s most experienced archaeologists, without being recognised as one. It is hard to label these female pioneers since they were not allowed to practice archaeology in the modern sense, but were nevertheless well informed and interested. The Nilssons, Brag and their contemporaries lived in a society that was becoming increasingly liberal, and liberal views found their way into interpretations of prehistory.
