É parte de:
The Book collector, 2022-10, Vol.71 (3), p.435
Descrição:
Cooke discusses The Pilgrim's Progress which is probably one of the most influential book of its kind. According to one critic, Bunyan's allegory is second only to the Bible in terms of its popularity, and it has always appealed, in the words of W. R. Owens, to an 'an extraordinarily large and varied readership'. First published by Nathaniel Ponder in 1678 in English and subsequently in many other countries and languages, it has appeared in hundreds of editions. Never out of print, The Pilgrim's Progress is one of the foundation stones of English literature and a powerful expression of Bunyan's puritan beliefs: its aphoristic style has been absorbed into the 'common currency'2 of spoken English and its evangelical narrative, tracing Christian's (and Christiana's) journeys from damnation to the Celestial City, has become a timeless metaphor for self-improvement and the pursuit of salvation.
