Descripción:
An outline is presented of the sociogeographic concepts of the city in the Serbian Jovan Cvijic's Balkansko poluostrvo i juznoslovenske zemlije ([The Balkan Peninsula and South Slavic Lands] Belgrade: ZIU SRS, 1966), first published in French in 1918, focusing on four topics: (1) the relationship between society & geography; (2) types of city; (3) migrations; & (4) ethnopsychological differentiation of the population. By trying to create a picture of the rise & fall of the Balkan city, Cvijic developed a theoretical-hypothetical framework & methodological devices for the morphology, economy, ethnicity, & psychology of cities in different cultural belts, eg, Mediterranean, Turkish-Byzantine (typically Balkan), or those of a patriarchal orientation. Cvijic's work & that of his pupils served as the foundation for all later Yugoslav Ur sociology. Modified HA
