  • Descrição: Problem-solving is considered an essential skill that is emphasised in the mathematics curriculum. Thus, several countries have mandated the development of mathematical curricula that adopt problem-solving approaches. Although several researchers and educational bodies widely recommend Teaching Mathematics through Problem Solving (TMPS), it has yet to be universally implemented, especially in developing countries. TMPS is a term used to define instruction whereby teachers engage students in problem-solving practices as a means of studying mathematics content. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of Teaching Mathematics through the Problem Solving method on middle school students' achievement and attitudes toward mathematics in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Implementing a semi-interventional method, the researcher in this study followed a pre-test-post-test, control group design with participants (N=30 students in each group) equally and randomly assigned to an intervention group and a control group over four weeks – the duration of the study. The researcher used a mixed-methods research methodology that relied on the triangulation of data collection tools, in which each data type was equally emphasised. The findings showed that students exposed to TMPS performed better in attitudes and mathematical achievement tests than those who learned mathematics through the traditional approach, compared with pretesting and post-testing performances for both groups. In addition, the results also indicated tangible improvements in the Intervention participants' achievements and attitudes on post-testing, showing that the TMPS approach influenced students' mathematical experience. The findings of this thesis finally have implications for teaching mathematics in KSA and the Middle East, as well as for reforms pertinent to the effective teaching of mathematics in K-12 education.
