There is no doubt that the functions of Synagogue and of rabbi have undergone considerable change in modem life, and especially in the United States. The Synagogue of today is in a number of important respects different from the Synagogue as it was two hundred, five hundred, or a thousand years ago. Similarly have the functions of the rabbi been markedly and significantly changed. That the changes should have taken place was inescapable in view of the changing character of Jewish life. As the character of the Jewish community changed, the Synagogue, being the creation of the democracy of Israel,
