  • Descrição: [...]Robert Hullot-Kentor (Long Island University, who became ill on the day before flying to Brazil but had his text read out loud to an eager audience) called attention to the intriguing fact that there are two contradictory usages of the expression "culture industry": one properly called capitalist (as in a report from the Chinese government on the precariousness, to be overcome, of its own "culture industry"), and one stemming from Adorno and Horkheimer. [...]it is important to point out that poster sections, reserved for undergraduates, were very well attended. [...]much of the vitality of the conference came from the strong presence of undergraduates, including some from the student movement. Besides being the result of laudable strivings by some individuals, such a thriving intellectual community deserves to be reflected upon because, for one thing, it is material proof of the ease with which Frankfurt School ideas are meaningful in Brazil. [...]a full theory concerning the Brazilian (or Third World) receptiveness to Frankfurt School ideas would be beyond the scope of these pages; however, a few interconnected points may be mentioned, if not properly developed.
