  • Descrição: This article aims to present and reflect on the process of transmission of knowledge and technical skills to general surgery residents at a public university hospital in Rio de Janeiro. Based on the ethnography of a surgical center--a sector in which residents learn, in practice, how to conduct surgery--qualitative research was carried out through 137 hours of participant observation, with interviews with surgeons, professors, and residents. The interactions between general surgeons, surgery residents, anesthesiologists, nursing staff, and patients were the subject of the reflection. The study demonstrated the process of embodiment of the general surgeon identity by the resident - when the student begins to inhabit a new world and acquires a new language and a position in the hierarchical structure of the medical institution. Learning includes technical improvement, the incorporation of a specific performance, and the rituals for performing surgeries.
