  • Descrição: This paper discusses the reasons leading to the rejection of Mies van der Rohes design project to the City of London in the 1960s--which was approved by the authorities in 1969 and rejected in 1982. In 1984, the businessman Peter Palumbo, who hired Mies in 1962, filed a request for reconsideration of the rejection, which was once again denied in 1985. That was the end of the long process of over 20 years that could have given "a Mies" to London, which was replaced by a James Stirling's building. The change of attitude (acceptance in the 1960s, rejection in the 1980s) denounces the clash between modern and postmodern views, evident in the last quarter of the twentieth century. The research was conducted with public documents of the Mansion House Scheme Archive (Royal Institute of British Architects). In these reports, it is apparent that there were two opposing positions, supporting or rejecting the design, both well-sustained legally, suggesting the rejection had other reasons. In addition to exposing the facts, this paper points to motivations of cultural nature, especially aesthetics, underlying the complex process that shaped this area of London. The reflection presented herein supports its methodological position in three ways to approach the problem, through which it is possible to interpret and consider why that society, in such a short time, took over and then rejected the same design. They are: the value of image, the identity and, especially, the taste.
