  • Descrição: This chapter discusses the origins of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, its development, controversies, and its more recent history. The history of EMDR can be traced back to a series of serendipitous observations. Initially, eye movement desensitization was viewed as a counterconditioning treatment, grounded in behavioral-oriented theory, that used rapid eye movements from tracking the therapist's back and forth hand gestures to elicit desensitization. The shift in the theoretical paradigm and implementation of EMDR training standards intensified the controversy surrounding EMDR. The chapter provides a description on: the EMDR controversy; evidence of resistance to EMDR based on professional standing; evidence of a theoretical turf war; and debate over the potentially biased interpretation of EMDR research. It also discusses the clinical practice guideline for the management of posttraumatic stress; and criticism over EMDR therapy's proprietary dissemination. Finally, the chapter explains the potential harm today from perpetuating the EMDR controversy. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: create)
