  • Descrição: What do we know about the university facilities in our Nordic neighbors? Most are founded in the Middle Ages, but all had a significant building growth in the 19th century. Hans-Olof Boström describes these buildings in a new book based on his doctoral work. Already the first sentence whets the appetite: "The 19th century was the great century of university construction." Unexpectedly, it is the German background that gets to form a portal for the further production. Where we could expect the Humboldt brothers in Berlin to play a major role, Boström shows that it is rather the other that is more important, both for the development of (especially) the natural sciences and (to a lesser extent) the humanities. But for everyone, partly through pictorial iconography that can be linked to Humboldt's idealism, classical formation applies.
