  • Descrição: Considerable research has explored perceptions of the legitimacy of the legal system among the general public, but fewer studies have examined how the perceptions of family members of incarcerated persons are informed by their vicarious experiences with the system. This study draws from in-depth interviews with family members of persons currently or formerly incarcerated for sex offenses to determine how the vicarious experiences and direct interactions with legal systems influence attitudes and perspectives of the legitimacy of the legal system. Findings show how experiences during four stages of the legal system-first contact, trial, incarceration, and postrelease-undermine perceptions of the legal system's legitimacy among families.
