  • Descrição: The twentieth century portrays the professionalization of architecture as well as the formation of different professional routes with the diversification of architects' careers in Turkey. In this context, Rebii Gorbon's career, which was based on architecture and also artistic and industrial ceramics design and manufacturing process, is a remarkable example of his era. However, Gorbon's professional life and works are mostly unknown. This study aims to present Gorbon's professional life by conducting archival research, literature review, and oral history interviews with his family, students, and colleagues. Graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in 1934, Rebii Gorbon performed his architectural productions in changing roles such as designer, implementer, and contractor. Starting from the late 1950s, Gorbon's architectural practices began to introduce interfaces between architecture, industrial design and production, as well as architectural education. He was a faculty member at the Academy of Fine Arts between 1962-1979. In 1958, Gorbon brought his interest in ceramics to the professional level with Gorbon Ceramic Factory which was one of the first companies investing in the design and manufacture of ceramics in Turkey. Gorbon was an important actor in terms of the development of the ceramic design and building materials industry in Turkey, also the relationship between architecture and ceramics. Rebii Gorbon's career also provides an insight into the unique dynamics of his period.
