  • Descrição: ABSTRACT This paper attempts to identify semantic opposition in Igbo language. It observed different kinds of semantic opposition existing in the language. The use theory of meaning is adopted as the theory of analysis. The researcher identified different kinds of semantic opposition that exist in Igbo language just any natural language, they include; Converse, Reverse, Directional Opposites and Taxonomy Sisters. It was discovered that semantic opposition exist in Igbo language and they are not restricted to word class. However, while some antonyms in the English language are formed by adding prefixes to the verb on the other hand, gradable antonyms in Igbo language are formed by suffixing -tu, -turu to the verb or imperatives to signify the extent, degree or gradable scale of opposition, the presence of ‘‘ezigbo’’ also represents the scale of the antonym. Again, single words can however also be used to identify degree or scale in the language.
