  • Descrição: Sugarcane is one of the important commercial crops in India. Farm operations were mostly mechanized for tillage and planting. The available machines for weeding-cum-interculture are not easy to operate in the sugarcane crops due to its leaves which restrict the operation. Therefore, weeding-cum-interculture operation is dependent on farm workers and require 400–600 man-h/ha apart from use of chemicals as pre-emergence. There is a need to increase the effective utilization of farm workers with minimal drudgery. Considering this, a walk-behind mini electric prime mover, a new source of farm power (electrimate), is designed and developed to increase the overall productivity of workers per unit time. Laboratory experiment was formulated to assess the power at different torque and speed on a frictional resistance mechanism to have a simulation of agricultural operations. The study suggests to have maximum design speed of 5 km/h (1.38 m s −1 ) for achieving maximum torque at operational speed of 1–2 km/h with new electrimate source of prime mover for agriculture. Developed 450 W mini electric prime mover is a versatile unit for agricultural operations like secondary tillage, planking, ridge/furrow making, interculture and slit breaking. This reduced drudgery by 90.7% in terms of total weeding force and 25.6% reduction in drudgery as per the force on operator’s hand while spading at soil moisture content of 21.4% and bulk density of 1.29 g/cc (d.b). The effective field capacity of prime mover with sweep type tool and three tine cultivator for weeding-cum-interculture in sugarcane crop were 376 and 408 m 2  h −1 at 0.48 and 0.44 m s −1 , respectively, at 50–70 mm depth. Battery run time was 190 min with 250 mm sweep type tool and it was 172 min for 300 mm three tine cultivator. The developed prime mover increased the human working capacity by 20–22 times than manual weeding in sugarcane with 20 cm spade. Further, it has potential to save 9.21 l diesel per ha (saving of 24.31 kg CO 2 /ha) as compared to single pass of rotary tiller in sugarcane weeding.
