  • Descrição: A marine research centre was planned by Hong Kong University at the rocky peninsula Cape D'Aguilar, at the south east tip of Hong Kong island. The centre would significantly increase the marine research programme at the university, particularly in relation to the threat to the diverse marine life both from severe pollution of inshore waters and from drastic land reclamation schemes. Included in the environmental protection programme would be the marshland region of Mai Po in the far north west of Hong Kong. This was one of the few remaining areas where mangroves grew. A total of 50 ha were managed by the World Wildlife Fund as a nature reserve with an educational centre, mudflats and a bird sanctuary for both residents and migratory species. The area was threatened by pollution in Deep Water bay, mainly from local pig and poultry farms.
