  • Descrição: Mystery books are reviewed. One example is Hotel Brasil: The Mystery of the Severed Heads by Frei Betto. Betto, a Brazilian political activist and Dominican friar, has crafted an unusual, noir-infused novel, written in short bursts, staccato style. While not entirely successful in its execution--the ending drops off precipitously and the detective is absent for much of the novel--it is a refreshing piece of satire, with nods to Voltaire's Candide. Also reviewed is Montecito Heights by Colin Campbell. This gritty thriller sets up immediately and maintains a breakneck pace throughout. Campbell's second series entry with its smart structure and unrelenting suspense will please Lee Child fans.
