  • Descrição: The working surfaces of porcelain stoneware tiles are commonly polished in order to enhance their aesthetic properties. However, such treatment makes them vulnerable to staining agents because it uncovers production flaws and machining-induced defects. Halos or stains can degrade the appearance. Reliable and reproducible colour measurements were made to quantify the amount of stain on the working surface, after staining tests were conducted according to ISO 10545 "Ceramic Tiles - Part 14: Determination of Resistance to Stains". The tested working surfaces and corresponding cross sections were carefully observed using light microscopy and SEM in order to study the stain penetration mechanisms and their relationship to the microstructure. Colour measurements were made using reflectance spectrophotometry. The results help to clarify the relationship between stain resistance and microstructural features. 10 refs.
