  • Descrição: My main avenues of research in my three months at the British School at Rome were twofold: firstly, I investigated the history of archaeological excavations on the Palatine Hill, which have been instrumental in directing some of the debates in the scholarship about how to interpret the ancient literary tradition about the city's founding. Learning more about the history of Giacomo Boni's work on the site, I found that he had set up two huts on the hill to demonstrate what the early city had looked like. Secondly, I researched the Mostra Augustea della Romanità, which took place at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in 1937–8, by looking at contemporary publications, as well as more recent analyses of archival material. Comprised largely of plaster casts of objects held in collections outside of Italy which had been made for an earlier exhibition held in 1911, the Mostra Augustea was meant to showcase Roman history to the world during the Fascist era. One of its first rooms was dedicated specifically to the stories of regal Rome, and included a life-size plough set up in the centre of the display, which reminded its viewers of the story of Romulus creating the first pomerium and of the idealised image of the contemporary Italian farmer.
