  • Descrição: Due to their investigations on the origins of the tensions and ambivalences underly'ng soc'al and cultural processes in Brazil and Argentina, the names of Roberto Schwarz and Beatriz Sarlo stand out in the scenario of contemporary literary and cultural critidsm. Through articulations between literature and soc'ety, aesthetics and politics, both critics have built, each in their own way, versatile projects for feeling, thinking and acting in their respective countries. This paper takes into account the theoretical relevance of their essays for both literary theory and sodology, as well as their reflections upon modernity and capitalism as seen from these countries' peripheral positions, in order to trace their intellectual paths and to outline the main theoretical and methodological prindples on which their critical projects rest. Following this brief outline comes an analysis of some of Schwarz' writings on Machado de Assis and Sarlo's essays on Jorge Luis Borges, focusing on their place as master writers at the periphery of capitalism. This analytical move intends to identify some of the ways through which the issue of periphery still challenges our critical and sodological imagination, serving as a stimulus to different artistic and intellectual responses whose potential is to look at the category of "modernity" from another point of view, in order to stop asking "what time is it?"..
