  • Descrição: The article studies the public cleaning service from domestic solid waste in Sao Paulo, Brazil, based on the year 2010. Highlights problems associated with the current model of waste management in Sao Paulo, and proposes solutions to the most critical issues, referencing the appropriate treatment given by other cities globalized. Thereview seeks to elucidate the concepts more relevant to the study of this subject. Information is collected about the management of solid waste and reverse logistics initiatives by the private sector, listing the barriers observed in this city. National and international examples of success when it comes to disposal of waste were studied, aiming to find sources of potential improvements. We conclude that the appropriate disposal of waste, through recycling, composting or energy generation, requires engagement of the population with the habit of separation and disposal of waste, involvement of municipal administration, providing resources to the development of these alternatives, and lastly, cannot dispense with the reverse logistics activities by producers, complying with federal. In seeking to broaden the discussion on solid waste, the article introduces this question, more significantly, on strategy decisions and investment of public and private sectors.
